Ask Us Draft Questions!

June 6th, 2008 · 19 Comments

By The Mailbag

As part our post-draft coverage, we thought the best approach would be to cover things that our readers wanted to hear about. We weren’t able to cover every player in our top 100 or get out all the content we wanted to before the draft started, but we still have that raw information.

Rather than let it sit, or do a cookie-cutter post-mortem you could find anywhere, we’ll field your questions and be the open source style resource we wanted for draft info when we started following the draft.

So, hit the new e-mail address we’ve set up for the mailbag, mailbag@saberscouting.com, and tell us what you want to know.

It could be breaking down some tools top 25 capsule style, maybe a mechanical look at someone (obviously won’t be too many of those given time considerations), breaking down how your favorite team approached the draft, or just sharing some dope we might have on signability and why-did-they-pick-him type stuff.

So, gather up all those questions and send them to mailbag@saberscouting.com and we’ll try to answer as many as we can, and there may be a special surprise for you guys tomorrow, I just don’t want to jinx it yet. It may or may not include Matthew Lesko, the creepy question mark suit guy.

Okay it doesn’t include him. But that’s because he wouldn’t respond to our interview request to talk about the history of the question mark. Stay tuned!

What do you think of the Cards taking Shane Peterson and Scott Gorgen where they did? What do you think of those two players?

Who is Jeremy Bleich? I have searching all over for this guy and he doesn’t come up anywhere. All I’ve seen is a small video of him pitching, and he looks a little like a left-handed Ian Kennedy, which may or may not be a good thing. How good is gerrit cole and when will I see him in pinstripes? Also could you give teams a draft grade of some sort?

Why oh why did the Astros take Castro? Also why did they take the Lyles kid over Devall? Was it money? Shoulld I trust Bobby Heck and Ed Wade? Please give me something postive. (Although if we sign Seaton that will be nice)

What were the best and worst pick in terms of value for rounds 1-5?

Is it just me or was the Dodgers’ draft (post Martin) completely uninspiring? I mean, Devaris Strange-Gordon in the 4th? Really?

What are your thoughts of the Giants draft? After getting the last position prospect of note in Posey, they got two pretty good prospects in Gillaspie and Kieschnick, who were ranked much higher than they were picked.

Guys - Do you have any idea why Adrian Nieto slid all the way to the fifth round? There were rumblings he could have been a sandwich pick and he ends up going 151st.

what happen to Palazzone and Silverstein? nobody mention their name anymore

  • 9 Brian // Jun 6, 2008 at 10:43 am

Silverstein had a couple of things: (1) strong commitment to UVA [and high $ to buy him out] and (2) injured his shoulder after pitching just four innings this season. Two MRIs turned up negative, but he was advised not to throw again while his shoulder experienced soreness and he didn’t pitch the remainder of the spring.

Non draft question: What do you think of Trevor Cahill’s dominance of the Cal League. Is this guy a legit top 15 prospect.

hey guys. who are the highest ceiling pitchers in the draft? how does Cole compare to Hughes and Porcello?

  • 13 Logan // Jun 9, 2008 at 2:19 am

Repeating question: Upsides of the Astros Draft? Does Castro have any chance of being R. Martin? Why 10? Jordan Lyles what do u think of him? Also do you think well sign Seaton and what do you think of the Arizona guys we got? Thanks.

  • 17 Derrick // Jun 23, 2008 at 1:39 pm

What can you tell me about Beau Brett and Jason Esposito (scouting report wise)? Also if not for their college commitments, what rounds would they have gone in?
